For Victims and Survivors
A special message to victims and survivors of domestic violence... from Judy House, Founder/Executive Director of Fresh Start
In 1988, I was a resident in a battered women’s shelter. I arrived with a black eye, no money, no self esteem and no idea what I was going to do next. I was afraid and alone. I finally found the courage to leave my abuser. Through hard work and determination, I rebuilt my life. I no longer have to endure an abuse so powerful that I felt I was a prisoner in my own environment. I no longer have to be fearful. I no longer have to be ashamed to go to work and the store with black eyes and bruises on my body. I no longer have to see the fear and distress in my chlidren’s eyes when they saw "daddy beating on mommy" and hurting her.
Today, I feel a strong calling to help others who are in the same situation that I was in, to inspire them with the concept, "if I can do it, you can too"!
