Through the years, we have witnessed many clients who have successfully achieved self-sufficiency and empowerment through our program services. The following are examples of some of our Fresh Start success stories.

Sarah
In 1997, Sarah was the first Fresh Start client. Fresh Start received her referral from Breaking Free, another agency that serves domestic violence victims. They provide support groups for victims and their children. Originally from Texas , she moved to Indiana at the request of her boyfriend. Once in Indiana , her boyfriend physically and emotionally abused her. After several months of abuse, she finally found the courage to escape. With no money and hoping to (eventually) move back to Texas , Sarah left that small city to seek shelter in Indianapolis . Fresh Start helped Sarah's family with initial needs of clothing and toiletry items, employment and housing. Fresh Start continued to help Sarah for six months until she was able to move back to her hometown in Texas . She now holds a position as director of a sorority. Fresh Start still receives updates from Sarah on a regular basis.

Emily
Fresh Start first met Emily while she was a resident at the Salvation Army shelter. She was disabled, receiving social security income. She had four children ranging in age from four to fourteen. She found subsidized housing and left the shelter. She saved her money and bought a used vehicle. Through the years, Fresh Start helped Emily with furniture, household items, toiletry items, and food assistance. Fresh Start also provided holiday assistance each year. In 2000, Emily enrolled in a beauty college. She completed the cosmetology course and aspires to be a cosmetology school instructor someday. In February 2002, Emily volunteered her nail technician services for Pamper Day, a social event that Fresh Start hosted for its clients. Emily’s children also continue to thrive well in a non-abusive environment. Emily reported that all four of her children made the honor roll at school in 2002. In 2003, Emily fulfilled her dream - she purchased her first home!

Debra
Fresh Start first met Debra while she was a resident in a transitional housing program. She was employed, but needed our assistance with food items. When she moved into permanent housing, Fresh Start delivered furniture and household items to her. She was promoted in her job. In 2002, she received a used vehicle from Fresh Start. The vehicle was donated from an individual in the community. Debra continues to do well in her journey of empowerment and self-sufficiency
